The Best Food Scanner Apps, Compared Honestly
We are building something in this category, which means you should discount what we say about ourselves and weigh what we say about everyone else. Here is the honest map: four tools, four different questions they answer well.
| Free tier | Price | |
|---|---|---|
| Yuka — is this product decent in general? | Generous | Free / paid tier |
| Fig — does this fit my diet profile? | 5 scans a month | $39.99/year |
| Spoonful — does this contain my allergen? | Generous | $24.99/year |
| Open Food Facts — what is actually in this? | Fully free, open data | Free |
| Aisleful — does this fit my numeric limit? | Planned unlimited | $19.99/year planned |
Where we lose
For allergen safety specifically, we would point you at Spoonful and at reading the physical label, and we are deliberately not publishing allergen judgments on this site. Getting an allergen call wrong sends someone to hospital, and we do not yet have the cross-contamination data or the clinical review to earn that trust. Everything on this site is carbohydrate and ingredient work, where the cost of being wrong is a bad day rather than an emergency.
Tell us we are wrong, or tell us to hurry up
We are testing whether anyone wants this before building it. A vote and an email are the only two signals we have.

Common questions
- What is the best food scanner app for allergies?
- Spoonful is the strongest of the mainstream options, and no app replaces reading the package. Advisory labelling — 'may contain' — is voluntary in the US and inconsistently applied.
- Is there a free food scanner?
- Open Food Facts is fully free and open, though it gives you data rather than a verdict. Yuka's free tier is generous.
- Which one works without installing an app?
- None of them today. That is the gap this site exists to test.
