Privacy policy

Tacet is a breathing app. This policy explains what the app collects, what it does not, and what choices you have. It is written to be read, not to be survived.

1. The short version

• There is no account. You never give us your name, email address or phone number, because the app never asks for one.
• Your practice stays on your phone. Your streak, your completed sessions, your reminder time and your settings are stored on the device and are never uploaded to us.
• We collect anonymous usage statistics through Google Analytics for Firebase, to understand how the app is used in aggregate. This does not include anything you did, said or typed that identifies you — the app has no such information to send.
• There is no in-app switch for this. Usage statistics are collected for the whole time the app is installed. §5 sets out what you can do about it: device-level controls, deleting the app, and writing to us.
• We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising. On Android, the analytics SDK does collect your device's resettable Advertising ID as part of its standard behaviour (§4). We do not use it to target ads, build an advertising profile, or share it with advertisers, and you can reset or delete it in your device settings (§5).

2. Who we are

Tacet is published by Municornio Ltd., 1075 W 14th Ave, Vancouver, BC, Canada. For anything in this policy, contact us at the address in §9. Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we are the data controller for the limited data described in §4.

3. What stays on your device and never leaves it

The app stores the following locally, using your device's standard app storage (SharedPreferences on Android, NSUserDefaults on iOS):

None of this is transmitted to us or to anyone else. It is not backed up to our servers, because there are no servers — Tacet has no backend of any kind. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it, permanently and irrecoverably, including your streak. There is no sync and no account recovery, by design.

Reminders are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device. No notification content passes through us or through any third party.

4. What is collected: anonymous usage analytics

To understand how the app is used and where it fails people, Tacet uses Google Analytics for Firebase, provided by Google. Collection runs for as long as the app is installed. The app does not offer a setting to switch it off; §5 explains the options you do have.

What is collected

• Events describing app usage, such as: the introduction being started, skipped or completed; a session being started, completed, ended early or interrupted; the length of that session in minutes and how many seconds elapsed; how many sessions you have done this week and the length of your current streak; the subscription screen being shown, dismissed, or resulting in a purchase, cancellation or error; a reminder being turned on or off; the vibration strength being changed.
• Aggregate properties used to group that data: whether the device holds an active subscription, your usual session length, and what class of vibration hardware the device has.
• Standard technical and approximate-location information collected automatically by Firebase: a randomly generated app-instance identifier, device model, operating system version, app version, language, and country or region derived from IP address. Google processes your IP address to derive that region; Firebase Analytics does not store the IP address itself.
• On Android, your device's Advertising ID. This is a resettable identifier provided by Google Play services. Firebase Analytics collects it as part of its standard behaviour, and we have not turned that behaviour off. We use it only to group the usage events described above — never to target advertising, never to build a profile of you, and never in combination with data from any other source. It is not collected on iOS.

What is never collected

• Your name, email address, phone number, or any account identifier — the app holds none.
• Your precise location. Tacet never requests location permission.
• Your contacts, calendar, photos, microphone or camera. Tacet requests none of these permissions.
• Advertising. Tacet contains no ads, no ad SDKs, and no ad network integrations. We do not build advertising profiles and we share nothing with advertisers or data brokers. The Advertising ID described above is collected by the analytics SDK and used only for analytics.
• The content of your practice in any personally identifying form. That you completed a two-minute session is collected; who you are is not.

Why

To answer questions we cannot otherwise answer without a backend: whether people who install the app ever complete a first session, whether five minutes is too long for the moments the app is built for, whether people who reach the free limit find the subscription screen comprehensible, and whether the app fails more often on some vibration hardware than others.

Legal basis (UK/EU GDPR): our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the app, under Article 6(1)(f). You have the right to object to that processing under Article 21; §5 explains how, and what we can do in response.

5. Your choices, and how to exercise them

There is no setting in the app. Tacet does not offer an in-app switch for usage data. Collection begins when the app is installed and continues until it is removed.

Deleting the app stops collection. Uninstalling Tacet ends all collection from that device immediately and permanently. This is the only way to stop it from the device itself, and it also deletes everything described in §3, including your streak.

Objecting. If you are in the UK or EU, you may object to this processing at any time by writing to us at §9. We will stop processing the data associated with the installation you tell us about, and delete it, within 30 days — see the paragraph below on what we need in order to identify it.

At the device level: on Android, Settings ▸ Google ▸ Ads lets you reset your Advertising ID, which severs the link to everything collected under the old one, or delete it, after which Tacet receives no Advertising ID at all. On iOS you can turn off Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Analytics & Improvements ▸ Share iPhone Analytics. These settings affect every app on the device, not just Tacet. Note that neither stops the rest of the collection described in §4 — the usage events and the app-instance identifier continue either way. Only removing the app does that.

Deleting what has already been collected: because analytics data is tied to a random app-instance identifier and not to you, we cannot look up "your" data on request. Deleting and reinstalling the app generates a new identifier and severs any connection to the previous one. If you want the data associated with a specific installation deleted, contact us at §9 — we can delete data by app-instance identifier if you are able to provide it, and can otherwise delete all analytics data for a given date range on request.

6. Subscriptions and payment

Tacet offers an optional subscription. All payments are handled entirely by Apple or Google. We never see, receive or store your card number, billing address, or any payment credential.

We receive from the store only whether the current device holds an active entitlement — a yes-or-no answer, with no identity attached. The app records that a purchase, cancellation or error occurred, and which plan was involved, as part of the analytics described in §4. It does not record the amount, the payment method, or anything about the account that paid.

Apple's and Google's own privacy policies govern the payment itself:

7. Who your data is shared with

• Google (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC), as the provider of Firebase Analytics, and only the data described in §4. Google acts as our data processor for that data. Google may transfer it outside the UK/EEA; those transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Google's terms: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
• Apple and Google, as the app stores handling subscriptions (§6).

That is the complete list. We do not share data with advertisers, data brokers, analytics resellers, or any other third party. We do not sell personal information, and we do not "share" it as that term is defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act.

8. Retention, children, and changes

Retention. Data stored on your device stays until you delete the app. Analytics data is retained by Firebase for a maximum of 14 months from collection, after which it is deleted automatically.

Children. Tacet is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has used the app and you want any associated data removed, contact us at §9.

Your rights. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or port your personal data, to object to processing, or to complain to a supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk). Most of these rights have little to act on here, because the app holds no identifying information about you — but §5 explains what we can do, and we will respond to any request within 30 days.

Changes. If this policy changes materially — in particular if the app ever begins collecting something new — we will update the date at the top and note the change in the app's release notes. We will not begin collecting a new category of data without saying so.
