FAQ
Every question, answered once
Tacet is a breathing app you use with the screen off, paced entirely by vibration. Here is everything people ask before installing it.
Practising
How long is a session?
One, two or five minutes. The app opens on the length you used last time, so a return visit is one tap rather than a decision.
What actually happens during a session?
The screen goes completely dark and a vibration paces the breath — in, hold, out, rest. It starts on a faster breath and settles onto a calmer one, so a session begun in an agitated state meets you where you are.
How do I check the time left?
Tap the dark screen once. The time remaining appears briefly and then clears itself, without ending the session.
How do I stop early?
Press and hold. Leaving takes a deliberate act, so a brushed pocket or a knocked table never cuts the practice short.
How do I know it has finished?
A distinct closing vibration, softer than the breath pattern. You never have to look at the phone.
What if I am interrupted?
The session ends, and the app tells you on your return that it was cut short because it was closed or interrupted — so you understand why it did not count.
Discretion
Can people around me tell?
That is what the app is built for. No audio, nothing on screen, and a vibration strength you set yourself: strong enough to follow in your hand, quiet enough that nobody across the table hears it.
Do I need headphones?
No. There is no audio anywhere in the app.
Will the app name or icon give me away?
The name is an abstract musical term and the icon is a plain mark. Neither reads as a wellness or mental health app at a glance.
What do the reminders say?
The app name and a neutral line, and nothing else. A lock screen glimpsed by a colleague reveals nothing personal.
Your phone
Will it work on my device?
On a phone with a high-fidelity haptic engine you feel a full breath envelope that swells and fades. On simpler hardware you feel a recognisable version of the same breath. If a device has no usable vibration motor, the app tells you plainly.
Can I change the vibration strength?
Yes, and it is free for everyone regardless of subscription. The range sits around a tuned default — comfortable in a hand, a pocket or on a desk, and never loud enough for anyone else to notice. If your device offers only one strength, the app says so rather than showing a slider that does nothing.
Can I start a session without opening the app?
Yes — a home screen widget on both platforms, a quick-settings tile on Android, a Control Centre control on iOS, plus Shortcuts, Siri and the Action Button. Each starts the length you used last, and pressing twice by accident will not restart a session already running.
Can I watch the breath instead?
Yes, as an option in the adjust panel. Screen-off remains the default.
Habit
How does the streak work?
It counts consecutive days you have practised. Any session on a given day counts for that day, so practising more than once is never penalised, and you see it on the completion screen right after finishing.
Can I get a daily reminder?
One, at a time you choose, which you can move or switch off whenever you like. You are only asked about it after you have already completed sessions — never before the app has proved itself.
What if notifications are off for Tacet?
The app tells you that they are switched off at the system level, so you know why the reminder cannot be enabled from inside the app.
Free use and subscription
What do I get for free?
Three sessions a week, at full length and with the whole mechanic — the free tier is the real thing, not a demo. The allowance resets every Monday and the home screen shows what remains.
Is the free tier limited to short sessions?
No. The limit is on how often you practise, never on how long or how deeply. Every length is available on the free plan.
What happens when I run out?
You can subscribe, or wait until Monday. Sessions started from a widget, tile, control or shortcut always run, even when the allowance is spent.
What does a subscription cost?
Monthly or yearly at the same feature level — the only decision is billing cadence. Prices are shown in your own currency and format by the app store itself, so what you see is what you will be charged.
Can I restore a subscription on a new phone?
Yes, through the store's own record. You never pay twice, and there is no account to recover.
Privacy and accessibility
Do I need an account?
No. No account, no sign-up, no sync.
What data is collected?
Anonymous usage statistics only, to work out what to fix — never your name, your location, or anything that identifies you. The privacy policy states what leaves the device.
Does it work with a screen reader?
Yes. Every control is described, including session lengths, the streak and each settings row — and during a session, the time remaining and how to end it.
Is it usable if I am deaf or hard of hearing?
Yes. Nothing in the app depends on hearing, because there is no audio in it at all.
